Turn-taking communal reading of vignettes orally. One at a time, students politely jump into the reading aloud whenever the urge hits them. At this point, the person presently reading accedes and allows the new reader to carry on.
After reading the story, students go back and underline key words, phrases, etc., that they think are particularly meaningful. Then they share the quotes in a group. This is the same as above in terms of "jumping in," but with individual quote sharing.
Variation: Readings may be taped, to be played back then to students, as "auditory poems."
