Juxtaposed Image-sketching

Performance Objectives: Students will demonstrate visually their understanding of Cisneros' use of juxtaposed images (new ideas or feelings resulting from placing images together) for the development of theme in the text.

Procedure: Students in pairs draw side-by-side images (e.g., of a "red balloon" and an "anchor" in the early vignette describing Esperanza's relationship with Nenny) in adjacent squares on a folded piece of paper.  Combining the images is O.K., but as in the vignettes, usually Cisneros leaves the reader / viewer to infer connections and conclusions about meaning.
